Sinusitis is a type of infection that affects some parts of our sinus. Some common symptoms of sinusitis include sinus pressure/pain, sore throat, stuffed nose, and fever. If these symptoms weren’t annoying on their own, some people report hearing loss as well.
What Is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is a type of infection which occurs in some areas of your sinuses. Some common symptoms of this include pressure and pain on the forehead, dizziness, facial soreness, fever and a sore throat.
When you develop this infection, your sinuses become inflamed or swollen. When this occurs, all the empty spaces between your bones become inflamed and your glands start to produce more mucus than before.
All of this inflammation and swelling make it tough to drain the increasing amount of mucus, therefore, resulting in a stuffy nose and sinus pressure.
Does It Cause Hearing Loss?
Since our sinuses are found close to our ear canal, when they start getting clogged, swollen, and congested due to an infection, it is a common occurrence to start losing some hearing function.
As a result, our Eustachian tubes (what connects the pathways of the ear to the throat) start to get clogged, therefore, preventing any fluids from passing through. Some common symptoms you should watch out for include:
- Pressure or pain in the eardrum
- Partial hearing loss
- Hearing sounds as if you’re underwater or going through a tunnel
How to Address the Problem
It is vital that you address your concerns with an ENT specialist. However, if you’re looking for home remedies, you can try:
1. Humidifiers or Nasal Spray
Moisture can step in as a huge relief for sinus pressure. While both humidifiers and nasal sprays tend to work just fine, you can also try to place a washcloth soaked with warm water on your face.
2. Keeping Your Head Upright
Leaning your head or bending forward will cause all the pressure to shift to your head, making matters worse. Avoid these movements as much as possible and your symptoms will ease up.
3. Avoiding Extreme Temperatures
A very cold or hot day could make sinus problems a lot worse. If possible, try to remain indoors until you notice some of your symptoms easing down.
